How To Write A Thank You Card

Some memories last forever; like writing what felt like a 100 thank you cards for graduation and The Doug Theme song. It’s pretty much the theme song of my life. These memories either haunt us or dance with us. Writing thank you cards for graduation is a memory that haunts me!! I hated it! My weak hand was so tired of writing and to be completely honest, it was summer, and the beach and I were in a serious relationship.

Fast forward a few years when I am living with my best friend. Who decided to live her best life and backpack through Asia one summer. That summer, she sent me a postcard and shared her adventures. YOU GUYS!! I WAS IN LOVE! It was personal and thoughtful of her to take the time to write to me! Out of everyone in the world, and that was when I was hooked. I got it. I finally understood why I had to say thank you to everyone who celebrated my graduation.

The not so sweet side of thank you cards is knowing where to start. You would think you could just sit down and boom, words travel from the brain to the hand, and the magic happens. Sadly , it’s not always like that but, that doesn’t mean you aren’t appreciative . You are! You just suck at saying thank you. JUST KIDDING!

Yup, writer's block; Its a real thing and thank you cards bring out the worse case dating back to when Pouis Prang brought thank you cards to America in 1856!

THE TIPS & TRICKS TO REMEMBER WHEN WRITING A THANK YOU CARD

Tip One: Have a name

Tip Two: Acknowledge what they did & why you’re thankful for it or the act

Tip Three: End it with a simple farewell

PERSONAL EXAMPLE:

Dear Drad, (Name)

Thank you so much for the coffee, I really needed it and it was perfect timing. It made my day when and I’m grateful for a friend like you. (what they did and why i’m thankful)

I appreciate your face.

Until later alligator, (Simple farewell)

See nothing crazy. I used a nickname to add a personal touch, I acknowledged what they did and why it made me happy, and ended it in a way that fits our friendship.

FORMAL EXAMPLE:

Dear Orlando, (Name)

Thank you so much for bringing me back a coin from Rome. I love the history behind it and can’t stop looking at its beauty! I’m keeping it in my favorite things box! (what they did & why i’m thankful)

The gift meant so much to me. You are a great friend and an even more amazing human. Don’t ever stop being your amazing self. (a little personal note)

Looking forward to spending my birthday with you! (nice farewell)

Can you see the difference between the two? I love writing the personal ones more but it’s never a bad idea to show good etiquette.
